The Proper Way to Maintain Your Vehicle's Paintwork

The importance of Maintenance

In this article, we discuss how to wash your car correctly. Taking these precautions will keep your car in the best possible condition. Most wear and tear of the paintwork is caused by improper washing and drying techniques – the major reason of instilling Swirl Marks and light scratches!

Things you’ll need:
- Foam Cannon (optional but highly recommended)
- High Pressure Washer (optional but highly recommended.
- 2 Buckets
- pH Neutral Car Wash Shampoo and Snow Foam Shampoo
- Grit Guards (optional but highly recommend)
- Wash Mitt
- Microfibre Drying Towels
- Drying Aids (Spray Wax or Quick Detailer)

Things to throw away because they are extremely harmful
- Sponges
- Chamois “Shammy”

Whats wrong with sponges?

They do a good job at cleaning, but most people don’t realize that it's course and flat. Which means it not only traps dirt in between the sponge and your paint but the coarseness will cause light marring and swirl marks too. Chamois work extremely well, but it ‘grips’ onto the paintwork. Any dust or dirt trapped it between, will cause light scratches! These effects will be amplified on cars with softer paintwork.

Step 1: Preparation
- Dilute Snow Foam with water, it is usually 1:10. Sometimes some products will have different dilution so check first before you mixed it up.
- Fill up 2 Buckets with water and put 2-3 caps of shampoo in one of the buckets.

Step 2: Pre-Wash
- Apply Snow Foam with the foam cannon and apply a nice and thick layer over the entire car. Let it sit for about 3 to 5 minutes (out of direct sunlight). In the meantime, you can take some of the detailing brushes and thoroughly brush the grilles and crevices and wheels.

Step 3: Rinse
- High Pressure Rinse thoroughly over the whole car

Step 4: Was
- Take your wash mitt, dip it into the shampoo mixed bucket. Wash a quarter of a panel each time. Start from the roof and work your way down. After each quarter of a panel, rinse the wash mitt in the plain water bucket and repeat the process above.

Step 5: Rinse
- High Pressure Rinse thoroughly over the whole car

Step 6: Drying
- Use your microfiber drying towel to dry over your car in single pass motions. Carry 2 to 3 Towels with you because usually a towel will get too wet after about 1/3 of the car.

Step 7: Final Touch
- Use our ceramic detailer spray and microfiber towel, spray and wipe over the whole car, panel by panel.

Paint Correction

A $3000 Three Step Paint Correction & Ceramic Coating on a Z06

This is a picture the completed product on a 2016 Z06 Chevy Corvette that I had done while training in Las Vegas, for the EVO Pro Ceramic coating installer certification. When we first got started the condition of the paint was pretty bad. Swirls over and scratches over 80-90% of the vehicle and some water spots. A full 3 step correction was done using a combination of EVO cut and polishes with the standard EVO Dual Action Polishers. Finally, two layers of EVO Pro Ceramic Quartz 9H installed to lock in the gloss for 4 years of protection. If this job were to be done with only one professional set of hands it would take a minimum 24 hours to reach this level of quality.

At SPP, here's how the paint correction process generally goes.
1) Snow foam as pre-wash to loosen up contaminants
2) 2-bucket system hand wash with Grit guard to ensure the wash mitt is always dirt free.
3) High pressure rinse
4) Car will be dried by using a microfibre weave drying towel. (We don't recommend using chamois "shammy" to dry the car because thats one of the major causes of swirl marks.
5) Application of an iron removing agent to remove any bonded iron.
6) Application of fine/medium grade clay bar treatment to remove any above contaminants.
7) Measure the paint thickness with Paint Thickness Gauge to ensure we have enough paint to work with.
8) Masking off crucial areas of the car to prevent stains and blemishes.
9) Doing a test spot before carrying any work, this is crucial. A lot of "detailers" skip this step and use the heaviest step to save time
10) Stages of machine polish with rotary/DA to remove paint defects and restore finish.

11) Second run of steps 1-3 to remove all debris.

12) Protecting (Ceramic Coating) the corrected paintwork by sealing in the gloss layer. This is an add on and only done after machine polishing has been done.
